Transcribing, learning to sing and play a parker solo. I feel like I got a lot out of this project. Most of all, a deeper appreciation of Parker.

Here is a link to the transcription…

Embraceable you

…and playing with Parker as closely as possible…

…I found doing this helped me to appreciate the incredible rhythmic detail in Parker’s music, speaking of which – here is a pretty special Steve Coleman article about Parker and Rhythm…

Strange time for jazz! We didn’t get to rehearse for this and it was early. It felt like a cold start which I actually enjoyed. It reminded me of going from a sauna into an ice-pool for some reason? [Ferg Ireland: Bass, Laurance 'the vision' Clack: Drums]

Lennie Groove – Lead Sheet

Posted in Transcriptions with tags , on September 28, 2011 by Graham Garside

If anyone is interested in the lead sheet to Mark Turners ‘Lennie Groove’, here it is. Both parts of the melody (sax and piano/guitar) are transcribed here. It took me quite a while to get how this tune worked rhythmically. I’ve had a lot of fun playing this with groups. Flying pentagons batman!!!

Lennie Groove (C)   Lennie Groove (Eflat)    Lennie Groove (Bflat)

Here is the tune performed by Fly trio and also by Kurt Rosenwinkel Quartet
